11th Jalón Ángel Photography Prize

The Jalón Ángel Photographic Archive, carefully preserved by San Jorge University (part of the San Valero Group), is pleased to announce the 10th edition of the Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize. This prestigious competition celebrates the artistic legacy of one of Spain’s most influential photographers, recognizing outstanding talent in contemporary photography.

Ángel Hilario García de Jalón Hueto (1898-1976), professionally known as Jalón Ángel, was a master of portrait photography and a key figure in Spain’s visual history. His career spanned over 50 years, during which he shaped the evolution of photography with his unique artistic vision and technical expertise. Born in Logroño, he began his formal training in his hometown before advancing his studies in Lyon and later in Paris during the early 20th century. His exposure to European photographic trends greatly influenced his style.

In 1926, Jalón Ángel established himself in Zaragoza, where he built a career blending two artistic passions: studio portraiture, which gained him national recognition, and travel, urban, and landscape photography, which reflected his fascination with capturing the world’s beauty. His works not only documented people but also conveyed deep social and cultural insights.

Beyond his photographic achievements, Jalón Ángel demonstrated a profound social conscience. His concern for education and equal opportunities led him to found the San Valero Professional School in 1953, which became the foundation of the San Valero Group. This institution was dedicated to providing vocational training for young people and adults lacking access to formal education, reinforcing his belief in photography and learning as means of social transformation.

To honor his contributions to photography and education, the Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize continues his legacy. The competition features two key categories: Portrait, a genre in which he excelled, and Travel and Traditions, reflecting his passion for capturing cultural expressions and landscapes. This year, an additional special category has been introduced: Cultural Heritage, aiming to highlight the significance of preserving history and tradition through visual storytelling.
