The Inge Morath Award 2024

Applications are presently open for the prestigious Inge Morath Award, which aims to assist a female or nonbinary photographer under the age of 30 in realizing a substantial documentary project. The selected awardee will receive a grant of $7,500, while an additional $1,000 grant will be awarded to one finalist to support their project.

A distinguished jury, consisting of members from Magnum Photos, the Inge Morath Estate, and the Executive Director of the Magnum Foundation, is tasked with the responsibility of selecting both the recipient and the finalist.

Inge Morath, an Austrian-born photographer, maintained a significant association with Magnum Photos for nearly five decades. Following her passing in 2002, the Inge Morath Foundation was established to oversee Morath’s estate and promote the study and appreciation of her photographic legacy. After the closure of the research space in 2014, Morath's archive found its home at the Beinecke Library at Yale University, with a collection of her master prints housed at the Yale University Art Gallery, providing accessibility to scholars.

To honor Morath’s unwavering support for female photographers, her colleagues at Magnum Photos established the Inge Morath Award. Administered by the Magnum Foundation, the award reflects its commitment to fostering creativity and diversity in documentary photography, in partnership with the Inge Morath Estate. For a deeper exploration of Morath's lasting influence in a predominantly male-dominated field, readers are encouraged to delve into Sumeja Tulic’s article in the British Journal of Photography commemorating the award’s 20th anniversary.
