Access to safe and clean water is a fundamental requirement for human health, well-being, and sustainable development. Yet, across the world, millions of people still struggle to secure reliable sources of drinking water due to complex factors, including climate change, pollution, population growth, and unsustainable water use practices. In response to these challenges, the United Nations established Sustainable Development Goal 6, which targets universal access to affordable and safe drinking water by 2030. However, with escalating environmental pressures and limited resources, achieving this goal continues to present significant difficulties, particularly in vulnerable regions facing water scarcity.
The National Geographic Society has taken active steps to address the global water crisis through its World Freshwater Initiative. This initiative not only examines global water scarcity but also educates and informs through projects like the World Water Map, a resource that visualizes water availability across different regions and highlights areas most in need. Additionally, the Society partners with the Conrad Hilton Foundation’s Safe Water Initiative to empower storytellers, journalists, and conservationists through grants. They invite individuals from all around the world, with a particular focus on those from underrepresented areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, to apply for funding. This support enables local experts and journalists to produce stories that bring attention to water access issues, advocating for change and fostering greater awareness.
Applicants interested in participating should possess experience in the communities they aim to cover, allowing them to provide authentic, relatable perspectives. Each applicant is required to submit a portfolio of media work, demonstrating their ability to capture and communicate impactful stories on this critical issue.
