The National Geographic Society - Grants & Investments

Since its establishment in 1888, the National Geographic Society has granted over 15,000 awards. These grants, presented to individuals recognized as National Geographic Explorers, represent a diverse global collective dedicated to advancing the Society's mission of uncovering and preserving the wonders of the world.

National Geographic Explorers comprise a varied group from different backgrounds and regions. They are involved not only in conquering mountains or delving into ocean depths but also in investigating the microscopic world in laboratories, documenting local community stories in fishing villages, and sharing their discoveries in educational settings. The Society supports innovative and groundbreaking endeavors in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology, all in alignment with its core objectives.

In addition to financial support, the Society actively promotes networking, connections, and educational opportunities for Explorers. It provides them with cutting-edge tools, technologies, and training, enhancing their impact and visibility through storytelling.

Grant opportunities are available through various avenues, providing a dynamic pathway to becoming part of the National Geographic community. Whether an emerging Explorer or a seasoned expert, each opportunity is tailored with specific criteria and advantages to address individual needs and goals.

Level I Grants are designed for individuals in the early stages of their careers, those looking to establish themselves in their fields, seeking guidance, or aiming to expand their network within the global community of National Geographic Explorers. These competitive grants, offering funding of up to USD $20,000, target those with the potential and drive to make significant positive contributions to their fields.

Applicants must demonstrate how joining the Explorer Community will advance their professional endeavors. Level I Grants welcome individuals who are new to the National Geographic Society network, as well as those already part of the network who have not yet achieved Explorer status. Notably, individuals who have previously received grants from the National Geographic Society are not eligible for Level I Grants.

Currently, the National Geographic Society is accepting pre-applications for Level I Grants. Successful candidates receive funding, exclusive training opportunities, and access to a network of fellow Explorers, experts, staff, partners, and forums. Applications must be submitted through the online portal, as mailed or emailed submissions will not be considered.
