"Trees" Photography Contest by NYC4PA

When Joyce Kilmer wrote his famous words in 1915, he captured the timeless beauty and significance of trees, a sentiment that continues to resonate today. Trees are everywhere—lining city streets, shading suburban backyards, and stretching across rolling hills and dense forests. They contribute to the landscape in countless ways, whether standing alone in stark contrast to a barren environment or forming part of a vibrant and lively backyard, complete with a swing hanging from a sturdy limb.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, trees are vital to the animal kingdom. Birds construct intricate nests among their branches, while squirrels and other small creatures find refuge in their hollows. Larger animals, too, rely on trees for shelter and sustenance, feeding on their leaves, fruits, and nuts. Without trees, entire ecosystems would collapse, as they are essential not only to wildlife but also to the planet as a whole.

Forests and jungles serve as thriving, self-sustaining environments, while individual trees on hillsides create dramatic silhouettes and cast fascinating shadows throughout the day. Some trees grow with perfect symmetry, standing tall and proud, while others develop unique, twisting forms shaped by time, wind, and weather. The beauty of trees is found in their individuality—each one tells a story through its branches, bark, and leaves. Whether they exist as a single tree standing alone, an orderly orchard, or an ancient, sprawling woodland, trees remain one of nature’s greatest works of art, reminding us of their enduring importance in our world.
