The musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac stands as a museum, cultural venue, and research hub, dedicated to promoting non-European cultures in the heart of Paris. It boasts an extraordinary collection of 370,000 objects, a rich archive of graphic art, and over 710,000 photographs spanning ancient to contemporary works. This photographic collection reflects the geographic and cultural diversity represented by the museum, tracing the history of photography from 1842 to today.
Launched in 2008, the museum’s Photography Residency Program has become a platform for supporting contemporary photographic creation. Each year, three laureates are chosen for their innovative projects that align with their artistic journeys. Selected works are also supported through final production and inclusion in the museum’s permanent collection. With an emphasis on global practices, the program invites diverse and experimental approaches to image-making, going beyond traditional documentary styles.
Over the past 16 years, the program has introduced remarkable talents and enriched national collections with global perspectives. Artists such as Sammy Baloji, Hugo Aveta, Che Onejoon, Lek Kiatsirikajorn (2012), Guy Tillim (2015), Gosette Lubondo, José Luis Cuevas, Luis Carlos Tovar (2017), Fatoumata Diabaté, Emilio de Azevedo (2020), and Ritual Inhabitual (2022) have left lasting contributions. Through its Photography Award, the museum has added 41 projects and 695 prints to its collection, featuring works on topics such as ecology (137 Years by Zhao Renhui), migration (Cartographies of Escape by Luis Carlos Tovar), post-colonial memory (Imaginary Trip II by Gosette Lubondo), gender dynamics (La Etapa Bruja by Liza Ambrossio), and identity (Resident and Visitors by Brook Andrew).
