More than just a museum, the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac is a cultural center and a space for teaching and research, created to celebrate non-European cultures in the heart of Paris. Its impressive holdings include 370,000 objects, an expansive graphic art collection, and over 710,000 photographs, ranging from early works to contemporary creations. The photography collection spans the globe and the history of the medium, covering developments from 1842 to today.
Since 2008, the museum’s Residency Program has championed contemporary photography. Annually, three artists are chosen to receive funding based on their original and innovative proposals. In addition to supporting the production of these works, the program incorporates select pieces into the museum’s collection. By embracing experimental and global approaches, the initiative extends beyond traditional documentary photography to foster a wide range of artistic expressions.
This program has uncovered numerous talents and brought global contemporary works into the national collection. Artists such as Sammy Baloji, Hugo Aveta, Che Onejoon, Lek Kiatsirikajorn (2012), Guy Tillim (2015), Gosette Lubondo, José Luis Cuevas, Luis Carlos Tovar (2017), Fatoumata Diabaté, Emilio de Azevedo (2020), and Ritual Inhabitual (2022) have been featured. Over 16 years, 41 photographic projects—amounting to 695 prints—have been added to the national collection. These works explore pressing themes like ecology (137 Years by Zhao Renhui), migration (Cartographies of Escape by Luis Carlos Tovar), post-colonial memory (Imaginary Trip II by Gosette Lubondo), patriarchy (La Etapa Bruja by Liza Ambrossio), and contemporary identity (Resident and Visitors by Brook Andrew).
