Prix Pour la Photographie Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac 2025
New York Times Portfolio Review 2024

The musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac serves as a museum, a cultural institution, and a center for teaching and research, highlighting non-European cultures in the heart of Paris. Its vast collection includes 370,000 artifacts, a remarkable archive of graphic art, and over 710,000 photographs, showcasing the history and diversity of photography from 1842 to the present.

In 2008, the museum launched its Photography Residency Program to foster contemporary photographic creativity. Each year, three artists are selected for funding based on the originality of their proposals and alignment with their artistic vision. The program also helps finalize and incorporate select works into the museum’s permanent collection. Open to experimental practices, the initiative explores innovative and global perspectives on photography, extending beyond traditional documentary forms.

This initiative has introduced numerous talents to the museum’s collections, reflecting global contemporary creation. Works by Sammy Baloji, Hugo Aveta, Che Onejoon, Lek Kiatsirikajorn (2012), Guy Tillim (2015), Gosette Lubondo, José Luis Cuevas, Luis Carlos Tovar (2017), Fatoumata Diabaté, Emilio de Azevedo (2020), and Ritual Inhabitual (2022) have enriched the museum’s holdings. Over 16 years, the Photography Award has contributed 41 projects and 695 prints to the collection. These works examine themes such as ecology (137 Years by Zhao Renhui), migration (Cartographies of Escape by Luis Carlos Tovar), post-colonial memory (Imaginary Trip II by Gosette Lubondo), gender roles (La Etapa Bruja by Liza Ambrossio), and identity (Resident and Visitors by Brook Andrew).
