Rotlicht Festival 2024 - Festival for Analog Photography

In 2024, the main exhibition will once again grace the impressive premises of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Spanning over 1300 square meters, the festival will showcase the work of 20 winners from the Open Call 2024. This year's festival theme, »Outsiders«, invites participants to explore and interpret this concept in their submissions, ensuring at least a marginal connection to the theme. Detailed information about the rules and the Q&A can be found here.

Rotlicht Festival warmly invites artists and photographers to delve into the theme »Outsiders«, whether they choose to interpret it narrowly or broadly. »Outsiders« can be a proud self-description, as seen in punk culture which views itself as a counter-society to the dominant framework. It can also be a derogatory term used to marginalize individuals, yet simultaneously, it can be appropriated by those marginalized to empower themselves. Furthermore, the notion of »outsiders« can evoke a sense of ambivalence about belonging to a place, a group, or a family.

The role of the photographer often aligns with the concept of being an outsider. Press photographers, for instance, document wars while attempting to remain detached. Paparazzi intrude upon the lives of celebrities without invitation. Modern photographers frequently operate as freelancers, navigating a precarious relationship with the capitalist labor market. Additionally, certain photographic technologies, such as cyanotypes, have historically been underrepresented and underappreciated, relegating them to the status of »outsiders« within the realm of photographic technologies.
