The Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) is thrilled to announce the commencement of its biennial photography competition, inviting photographers from around the world to submit their entries. This year's theme is "Viewpoint," offering participants the opportunity to submit up to five digital images of their choice, captured within the past 18 months using any type of camera. Entrants are encouraged to explore the subject matter in any way they see fit. The previous edition of the competition garnered over 500 submissions from 40 countries, earning high praise from our esteemed panel of industry judges for their outstanding quality and artistic depth.


ROSL PHOTO 23 is a FREE TO ENTER competition that features a total prize fund of £3,500. The shortlisted entries will be exhibited in London, and the winning images will be published in Overseas Magazine. The competition is open to photographers aged 18 and above who are citizens of Commonwealth or former Commonwealth countries, the USA, EU and EEA countries, or Switzerland. ROSL also welcomes entries from participants outside of the listed geographical areas if their images have a connection to current Commonwealth countries.


PRIZES:


1st Prize: £2,000, along with a 5-day trip to London for the exhibition opening on Thursday, December 8, 2023 (including accommodation at the Royal Over-Seas League). The winning image will also be published in Overseas Magazine, and the winner will receive professional development support from ROSL ARTS.


Runner-Up: £1,000, with the winning image published in Overseas Magazine.


The Madiha Aijaz Prize: £500, awarded to a Young Photographer of Promise under 23 years of age. The winning image will also be published in Overseas Magazine.


The top 20 shortlisted entries will be exhibited at Over-Seas House from December 9, 2023, to February 4, 2024.


TIMELINE:


The deadline for all submissions is Friday, September 1, 2023, at 5 PM GMT. Entrants must be over 18 years of age. Full terms and conditions can be found below.


The 20 selected images for exhibition, as well as the overall prize winners, will be announced on Friday, October 6, 2023.


ROSL PHOTO 23 will open at Over-Seas House on Thursday, December 8, 2023, from 6 PM to 8 PM and will be available for viewing from December 9, 2023, to February 4, 2024.


Competition Panel:


The competition will be judged by a panel of esteemed professionals in the field of photography, including:


Jocelyn Bain Hogg: Documentary photographer, educator, and author of renowned photographic books, including "The Firm" (Trolley, 2001). Course Leader at the London College of Communication for BA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.


Charlotte Jansen: Journalist and author of "Photography Now: Fifty Pioneers Defining Photography for the Twenty-First Century" (Tate, 2021) and "Girl on Girl: Art and Photography in the Age of the Female Gaze" (Laurence King Publishing, 2017).


Seamus Murphy: Documentary photographer and filmmaker, recipient of seven World Press Photo awards for his outstanding work in various regions, including Afghanistan, Gaza, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Peru, and Ireland.


Hannah Starkey: Artist recognized for receiving accolades such as the Vogue Condé Nast Award (1997), the 3rd International Tokyo Photo Biennale's Award for Excellence (1999), the St. James Group Ltd Photography Prize (2002), and the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (2019).


Nilupa Yasmin: Artist and educator whose works have been included in numerous permanent and private collections, including the Government Art Collection, The New Art Gallery Walsall, and Birmingham Museums Collection. She currently serves as a Lecturer in Photography and recently completed her MA in Photography Arts at the University of Westminster.
