Applications are currently being accepted for the Inge Morath Award, a grant bestowed upon a female or nonbinary photographer below the age of 30 to aid in the realization of a long-term documentary project. The chosen recipient will be granted $7,500, while one finalist will also receive a $1,000 grant to support their project.
A jury comprised of members from Magnum Photos, the Inge Morath Estate, and the Executive Director of the Magnum Foundation is responsible for selecting both the recipient and the finalist.
Inge Morath, an Austrian-born photographer, maintained an association with Magnum Photos for nearly five decades. Following her passing in 2002, the Inge Morath Foundation was established with the objective of managing Morath’s estate and promoting the study and appreciation of her contributions to photography. Upon the closure of the research space in 2014, Morath's archive was acquired by the Beinecke Library at Yale University, with a set of her master prints housed at the Yale University Art Gallery, where they are accessible to scholars.
In honor of Morath’s dedication to supporting female photographers, her colleagues at Magnum Photos established the Inge Morath Award. Administered by the Magnum Foundation, the award aligns with its mission to foster creativity and diversity in documentary photography, in collaboration with the Inge Morath Estate. To delve further into Morath's enduring impact and influence within a male-dominated industry, readers are encouraged to explore Sumeja Tulic’s article in the British Journal of Photography commemorating the award’s 20th anniversary.
